SPC Natatorium Announces 2024 Summer Swim Schedule

The South Plains College Natatorium will be open from June 3 to Aug. 8 (except on the July 4 holiday) for summer swimming and classes.

Members can only do lap swims from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. To swim at the Natatorium during open swim from 1:30 to 5 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, one must be a member or a guest of a member.

The Natatorium has the following membership rates:

Individuals: $75 for the summer and $150 for a year
Couples (married): $100 for the summer and $200 for a year

Family (two parents and two children): $150 plus $25 for each additional child for the summer and $300 plus $50 for each additional child for a year

SPC staff: Free
SPC family: $75 for a year
Hockley County senior and fitness center members: Free
Guests (limited to two): Must be with a member and pay $5

Parties hosted at the Natatorium will depend on the number of lifeguards available and classes taking place. To host a party, which can only take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and 2 to 4 p.m. or 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, call 806-716-2499 with a week’s notice.

Enrollment is limited for classes at the Natatorium. Starting May 20, one can register online at https://secure.touchnet.net/C20027_ustores/web/index.jsp and pay $80 by credit card. Parents may test their child’s swimming ability during the first week of open swim.

Natatorium Director Mike Harrison, who has 50 years of swimming experience, will instruct all classes. Class times are subject to change depending on the number of lifeguards available and are 50 minutes each day from Monday to Thursday unless otherwise stated.

Students in Beginner Swimming must be at least six years old (no exceptions). They will be taught floating and swimming on their front and back. Class times and dates are as follows:

10 to 10:50 a.m. and 11 to 11:50 a.m. from June 17-27
9 to 9:50 a.m. and 10 to 10:50 a.m. from July 8-18
11 to 11:50 a.m. from July 22 to Aug. 1

Advanced Beginner Swimming is for students who have passed Beginner Swimming. Students will learn elementary backstrokes and diving and will improve crawl strokes. Class times and dates are as follows:

9 to 9:50 a.m. from June 17-27
11 to 11:50 a.m. from July 8-18
10 to 10:50 a.m. from July 22 to Aug. 1

Intermediate Swimming is for students who have passed Advanced Beginner Swimming. Students will learn breast and side strokes. This course prepares students to become future lifeguards from 9 to 9:50 a.m. from July 22 to Aug. 1.

The Adult Beginner class is for anyone 14 years or older who wants to learn swimming and the basic skills for survival. This course is from 7:15 to 8 p.m. from July 9-25 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Parent/Child class is for young children from six months to six years old. Those not yet potty-trained must wear rubber pants or swim diapers. Adults must accompany each child in the water. The emphasis of the class, which costs $40, is water adjustment and interaction between the parent and child. Class times and dates are as follows:

1 to 1:30 p.m. from June 17 to July 3 on Mondays and Wednesdays
6:45 to 7:15 p.m. from June 13 to July 3 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and one Wednesday
1 to 1:30 p.m. from July 8-24 on Mondays and Wednesdays
6:45 to 7:15 p.m. from July 9-25 on Tuesdays and Thursdays

For community exercise classes, everyone except for SPC staff must pay $75.

The Early Bird Swim class, which is non-instructional and for lap swimmers only, meets from 6:30 to 7:15 a.m. from June 3 to Aug. 7 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Deep/Shallow Water Aerobics class, a non-instructional combination of stretching and aerobic activity in the pool, meets from 7:15 to 8 a.m. from June 3 to Aug. 7 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Arthritis class, a low-impact exercise class for people with arthritis (students do not need to be arthritic to attend), meets from 8 to 8:45 a.m. from June 3 to Aug. 7 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Water Aerobics class, a water exercise program designed to improve flexibility and strength and increase aerobic capacity, meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. from June 4 to Aug. 6 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
