Levelland Police Department participated in the annual “National Night Out” celebrations last night as a chance to bring the community together and bridge the gap between law enforcement personnel and their citizens. A large undertaking, the event was held in the evening at LG Griffin Park to accommodate an unexpectedly large crowd. A number of groups were involved from Levelland PD, Hockley County Sheriff’s Office, Game Wardens, and outreach groups such as the Blue & You, and Love Levelland groups. Officer Aryn Corley fired up the grill to cook hotdogs; drinks and popsicles were also provided free of charge to the community. Officers were given a number of raffle tickets and encouraged to mingle and interact with citizens who arrived, and from these tickets backpacks of school supplies and several gas cards and Wal-Mart gift cards were drawn in a raffle. Hockley County Emergency Management rolled out the mobile command unit, and Levelland Fire Department brought out a fire truck to give the community a close look at the inner workings, and Levelland PD rolled out the Animal Control truck full of adoptable pets, as well as the specially trained K-9 unit Luna to the party to greet guests. Levelland Lobo Cheerleaders were also in tow, giving free face paintings Justice of the Peace Derek Lawless took to the microphone to talk a bit about the Love Levelland group and their upcoming projects, the largest of which is an adopt-a-family style Christmas project they are seeking applications for. This event is growing into tradition for LPD, and there are already plans in the works for bigger and better celebrations in the coming years. This opportunity to bring our law enforcement officials to a more approachable and grounded position within the community certainly was not and will not be overlooked.
