An early morning fire Saturday caused extensive damage to at least two businesses in Slaton. The call came in to the Slaton Police Department at just before 3:00 am Saturday morning of smoke filling the building at Klemke’s Sausage. The fire department was dispatched and when they arrived the building was filled with smoke. They entered the structure and tried to put the fire out, however, conditions worsened and firefighters had to exit the structure.

Additional departments were dispatched from Lubbock, Ransom Canyon, Buffalo Springs as well as EMS units from Slaton and UMC all responded to the scene. Area fire departments worked several hours to contain the fire to the two main buildings. The Klemke’s Sausage and the Slaton Medical Clinic were both declared a total loss according to reports. The Slaton Bakery located near the fire was not damaged however, they were closed on Saturday. Fire units had the blaze contained by 9:30 am Saturday morning and worked battling hot spots into the late afternoon Saturday.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and the State Fire Marshall’s office was called in to investigate.

The Slaton Medical Clinic is planning to open on Monday, June 17th at the SEDCO building located at 101 North 9th Street in Slaton. SEDCO has donated a room for appointments.
