Cochran County Grand Jury Clears DPS in March Officer Involved Shooting

The Cochran County Grand Jury in the 286th Judicial District met last week and cleared the DPS Officers involved in a March shooting.

286th District Attorney Chris Dennis presented the evidence to the grand jury and they ruled no further investigation was needed and no charges should be filed. All cases involving an officer shooting and killing someone in the 286th Judicial District is presented to a grand jury, as a matter of policy, according to the District Attorney.

DPS reported that on March 28th, troopers were involved in a pursuit which started in Hockley County and ended in Cochran County. Officers tried to end the pursuit by deploying stop strips. Once the vehicle come to a stop the driver started shooting at law enforcement and DPS Troopers returned gun fire. The driver, Leonardo Gallegos, Jr. was injured, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
