Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson, Lt. Bryan Witt has confirmed that the Texas Rangers division of DPS are currently investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred March 27th in Cochran County.
According to reports released by DPS Thursday morning, at approximately 4:15 pm Wednesday afternoon, a DPS Trooper accompanied by a DPS Special Agent attempted to make a traffic stop on a 2006 Chevrolet pickup in Levelland for a traffic violation. The vehicle refused to stop and the driver evaded law enforcement with his vehicle. DPS Troopers continued to attempt to stop the vehicle by deploying tire deflation systems (spikes). The vehicle was eventually spiked and continued to evade law enforcement in a field northwest of Whiteface. The driver shot at law enforcement forcing them to return gunfire. According to a statement released by DPS the driver was injured during the shooting and was pronounced dead at the scene. DPS has identified the driver as Leonardo Gallegos Jr., 40, of Muleshoe. According to DPS he had several active warrants including one for possession of a controlled substance and one for failure to register as a sex offender.
The Texas Rangers continue to investigate. The DPS thanks the DPS Aircraft Division and the Hockley County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during the incident.
