The City of Levelland Street Department continues to spray for mosquitoes most evenings and has been spraying continuously over the past several weeks as a result of the recent rains. The City has approximately 98 miles of streets and has three (3) spraying rigs. With all three (3) spraying rigs running it can take up to three days to cover the entire City. In addition, the City continues to treat standing pools of water including playa lakes in the community to prevent mosquito hatcheries.
“We will continue to work aggressively to control the mosquito population in Levelland by applying both larvacide and adulticide insecticides” said Kevin Hurn, Director of Streets and Sanitation. “It is important to keep our community safe and as mosquito free as possible.”
Areas holding standing water provide a favorable environment for mosquito habitats. In
addition, tall weeds and grass areas also provide favorable conditions for mosquitoes.
“While the City will continue to spray and treat for mosquitoes we are reaching out to the public and asking for help,” said Assistant to the City Manager Joe Cavazos. “We are asking citizens to assist by eliminating areas with standing water and keeping a well manicured lawn to eliminate areas that can be used as habitats for mosquitoes.
