Levelland Police responded to various calls on Independence Day and the later in the day the busier police got. Police responded to many fireworks calls where people were popping fireworks inside the city limits. Their is a ban against all fireworks inside the city limits. Hockley County Sheriff’s Office also responded to several fireworks calls.
Levelland Fire Department had a busy evening as well. At just after 9:00 pm, firefighters responded to what was reported as a vehicle fire at the intersection of Highway 385 and West Jefferson in Levelland. Once firefighters arrived, they discovered that someone had trash and debris catch fire in the back of their pickup. Witnesses said they saw a person driving a pickup, dump the burning trash and debris in the roadway and drive off. Firefighters had the blaze out within minutes. Just moments after this blaze, firefighters responded to a grass fire west of the Levelland City Park on West Houston street. Whiteface Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to assist, however, the call for assistance was cancelled as the fire was small and was out within a few minutes. Firefighters also responded to a business on the Sundown Highway at just after 11:00 pm Wednesday night to a debris fire, the blaze was brought under control in a few minutes. Firefighters also responded to a one vehicle rollover with injuries at the intersection of FM 168 and FM 1585 at just before 11:30 pm. One person suffered significant injuries in the accident and was transported to an area hospital. While firefighters were enroute to the accident, they discovered a grass fire west of FM 168. Another truck was called to respond to this grass fire and brought it under control.
