Almost a year ago, nearly every building and every home in Anton was damaged in a severe thunderstorm. Residents are still working to make repairs and clean up from the storm, there was no federal or state aid available.
On Saturday, June 9th residents will be hosting a service day and is requesting volunteers to assist. The event is being held in conjunction with South Plains Regional Volunteer Organization Active in Disaster. The nearly 400 homes that were damaged in the storm is still in need of repair.
Anton city officials said the community did not qualify for any local, state or federal aid, leaving the full cost of repairs to the residents.
Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to report to the Anton Church of Christ at 401 Lawrence Avenue at 8:30 am Saturday morning. Volunteers and residents are invited to a free BBQ lunch at noon back at the church.
