Ransom Canyon Home Destroyed by Fire Tuesday

Ransom Canyon FireA home in Ransom Canyon was totally destroyed by fire on Tuesday, January 30th.  The fire threatened an additional 20 homes in Ransom Canyon and at least 25 acres across from the home was destroyed.

Rand McPherson, chief of the Ransom Canyon Volunteer Fire Department said the blaze was reported at just after 2:15 pm.  The Ransom Canyon Fire Department along with Buffalo Springs VFD, Roosevelt VFD, Slaton Fire Department, Idalou VFD, UMC EMS and the Texas A&M Forest Service all responded to the scene.

The Texas A&M Forest Service said embers from the house fire jumped across the street to fields, threatening an additional 20 homes and 25 acres of land.  The fire was listed as 95% contained.  Forest Service crews and Ransom Canyon fire crews remained on the scene through early Wednesday morning fighting hot spots.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation.  No injuries were reported.

The forest service said the quick response by area fire departments stopped a bad situation from getting much worse.
