As the flu epidemic hits the south plains, Lubbock hospitals are running out of beds for patients.
Dr. Craig Rhyne, Regional Medical Director of Covenant Medical Center said that Covenant is on diversion plans and are diverting patients as they have physically run out of beds.
With diversion in place, there have been questions concerning the urgent care needed by patients. Dr. Rhyne noted that trauma patients, stroke, and heart attack patients which require immediate care will be dealt with on a case by case basis. He said those cases have to be handled and any hospital in the region will handle emergency cases and not divert.
It was noted that patients may see an increase in ambulance transportation costs to move to another facility three to six hours away.
