The Levelland ISD Board of Trustees held their regular meeting on Thursday. A full report from that meeting is below.
During the public forum portion of the meeting, Michael Wiiest addressed the board concerning the baseball facilities for Levelland ISD. He stated that the bond issue has been great for the district. He complimented the facilities which have been addressed. He, however, feels that Levelland baseball facilities have been overlooked. He noted that it does not fit the needs of today. He noted that the concession building is not even able to be used as it is located too far away that people will not walk that far to buy anything. He noted that the booster club is currently bringing a trailer in to use. He also noted that the restroom facilities are also really small and need some work. He also pointed out that the press facilities need expanded for the number of people that use it. He asked that the board look at the baseball facilities and see what could be done.
The board approved consent agenda items including the summer school calendar and a number of updates to policy in accordance with the Texas Association of School Boards. The board also approved several waivers for staff development which will allow the district to offer staff development in summer and count it towards days set aside for staff development during the school year. They also approved a waiver for half days for staff development as well as a student schedule waiver mainly for high school students during STAAR testing. These waivers have all been used in the past, however, they have to be updated every 3 years.
They also approved the resale of property at 607 W. Washington.
The board also reviewed the monthly financial report. In the bond finance report it was reported that the projects are coming in within budget. It was noted any money that is left must be used for other projects and cannot be applied to bond payments.
The board reviewed the school calendar being proposed for the 2017-2018 school year. It was noted it is no longer on a number of days students must now be in school a total of 75,600 minutes of instruction in order for district to receive full funding. The 2017-2018 school year will begin on August 21. The first holiday will be September 4 for Labor Day. Thanksgiving holidays will be from November 22-24 with Christmas holidays beginning December 25 and ending on January 5. Classes will dismiss early on December 22. Spring break will run from March 12-16 and the final day of classes will be May 24 with Graduation set for May 25 at 7pm in the SPC Texan Dome.
The board also approved a resolution to officially join the Texas Educational Employers Benefit Cooperative which has provided low cost life insurance to Levelland ISD employees.
The board also approved 2 budget amendments. Both of the adjustments had a zero net effect on the overall budget.
The board also approved the quarterly financial reports as presented by the Chief Financial Officer.
Superintendent Jeff Northern presented an update on the bond projects. It was noted that the building for the new Ag Farm is going up and should be completed by the end of the school year. It was noted that the trees which were donated by a local individual has been planted around the facility. Architects with Parkhill Smith and Cooper is currently looking at the scope of the work for the Cactus facility and then the final project will be discussion on the demolition of the old football stadium.
The board also approved the hiring of Katie Lowery for 5th grade Math and Social Studies at the Intermediate School. She currently teaches in the Glen Rose ISD.
