Canon Air Force Base officials have confirmed the deaths of three airmen in a plane crash outside of the Clovis Municipal Airport.
Cannon Chief of Public Affairs said the three airmen were assigned to the 318th Special Operations Squadron. They were participating in a training exercise Tuesday night around 6:50pm when their U-28A crashed approximately a quarter-mile east of the airport. The crash reportedly caused a fire which was extinguished by first responders around 7:40pm Tuesday night.
Officials with the Air Base said the identity of the airmen would not be released until 24 hours after the notification of the next of kin.
In a statement released by Cannon Air Force Base Col. Ben Maitre said “We are deeply saddened by this loss within our Air Commando family.” “Our sympathies are with their loved ones and friends and I pledge the support of my team during this difficult time.
Cannon Air Force base officials also announced early Wednesday morning that the Emergency Family Assistance Center has been fully activated.
