Levelland Fire Department along with mutual aid from Brownfield, Whiteface, Sundown, Morton and Plains along with trucks from the Texas Forest Service battled a massive grass fire South of Sundown Tuesday afternoon.
We are told that the blaze started at just before 2:30pm Tuesday afternoon in Yoakum county and quickly burned into Hockley county near 1780 at the Hockley and Cochran County line. Maintainers from Hockley, Cochran and Yoakum County also worked to blade fire breaks to keep it from approaching residential areas in Sundown.
The blaze forced the evacuation of residents in Sundown living South of Richardson street around 4:00pm according to Curtis Schrader, Sundown City Administrator. Those residents were allowed back in their home around 5pm.
According to the Texas Forest Service, as of late last night, the fire was listed as 85% contained and burned a total of 8,500 acres of grass land. No homes were damaged in the blaze.
While firemen were still actively fighting the blaze near Sundown, they were called to another grass fire in northern Hockley County, west of 385 and north of 597. That blaze was listed as contained last night around 9:00pm.
