Hockley County Sheriff Issues a Scam Warning

Hockley County Sheriff, R C Cheek is issuing a warning for residents to be sure and use a reputable contractor and one you know for construction work.  He said for the second time this month a Hockley County resident has been scammed by itinerant contractors.

It was reported that a local resident could have been scammed out of over $17,000 this week had a local bank not stepped in and refused to cash the checks and kept them.  The Sheriff’s office said that a local resident had hired someone to do seal coating and had paid for the job, however, City Bank refused to cash the checks for the contractor and kept them which prevents them from being cashed elsewhere.  Cheek said that the contractor came back to the home however, the victims son ran them off.  He warns that most of the itinerant contractors are preying on the elderly and seem to center around seal coating, concrete and roofing contractors.

Cheek says “Be diligent and ask someone before hiring a contractor.  If you don’t know them contact the Sheriff’s office at 894-3126 if you have any questions.”

Gotcha! I never use those guys who come knocking on my door! And I would never have that black top done to my driveway. I use local contractor’s.
