Levelland ISD Board of Trustees Approve Employee Contracts on a Split Vote

Levelland ISD
The Levelland ISD Board of Trustees met Thursday night in a regular meeting.  A full report of that meeting is below…..
After a lengthy executive session last night Levelland school board members voted to extend over 200 professional teacher, counselor, nurse, counselor  and administrative contracts while being split over a principal’s contract.
The board approved  personnel recommendations on a 6-1 vote for 32 teachers, nurse and counselor at Levelland Academic Beginnings Center, one technology specialist,  26 teachers and counselor at  Capitol Elementary, two teachers at Carver, 71 teachers, counselors and librarian at High School, 29 teachers, counselor, librarian and nurse at Levelland Intermediate,  50 teachers, nurse, counselor and librarian at Levelland Middle School; 28 teachers, counselor, nurse and librarian and South Elementary, 14 SPECO support staff and 19 administrators. The board president, FE Shaheen cast the only dissenting vote.  Board members Rusty Gibson and Ronnie Watkins abstained from voting on their wive’s contracts.
The board was split, however on the topic of new hire personnel although it was quickly obvious that they were not split on two people, Lance Terrell as the new Chief Financial Officer at the Central Office nor on Victoria Vasquez, PPCD at Levelland ABC. They were split on the promotion of Robbie Phillips to the position of Principal at Levelland High School, despite his recommendation from Superintendent Jeff Northern and Director of Personnel, Rodney Caddell.  Board president F.E. Shaheen recommended that Phillips be removed from being voted on with the other two employees but the motion to that effect was voted down with only Glenn Smith and Shaheen voting for the motion.  Terrell will replace Nick Williams who is retiring as Chief Financial Officer for the district.  The motion to hire all three as recommended by the superintendent passed on a similar 5-2 vote with Rusty Gibson, Tania Moody, Paul Ochoa, DeEtte Edens, and Ronnie Watkins voting for the motion.  F E Shaheen and Glen Smith cast the 2 dissenting votes.  Phillips will replace Gary Bridges, who is retiring as Principal at the High School.
Early in the meeting, Nick Williams provided reports on both the bond issue and monthly financials, which were approved with little discussion.
The board also approved a state-mandated report that shows grade levels and subject areas the district will teach. The report was approved as presented.
Williams also reported that the Hockley County Appraisal District received a clean audit again this year, ended the year under budget and is refunding the district  $24,476.
Board President F E Shaheen reported, “We are working on a plan for the ag farm as far as a location goes with local governmental entities.” He reported that the district now has photos of new ag farms which have been built around the area, adding that the new facilities are totally different from what Levelland has currently.
