Two weeks ago investigators with Child Protective Services came in to Childrens Hope on West Avenue around Noon and began the process of removing approximately 30 residents. They were all loaded on buses and taken to a location out of this region. There are still many questions to be answered and a Bexar County Judge is demanding answers.
In a court hearing held recently in San Antonio, Bexar County Judge, Richard Garcia said he didn’t get any answers and if anything has more questions. Bexar County Assistant DA Kim Burley, says CPS had no choice but to move the kids, saying “Children’s Hope actually gave Child Protective Services 30 days notice to remove all children. The judge said “That is unheard of.” It was also pointed out that the state pays a residential treatment center $16,000 to $54,000 per child per year depending on the care level. Burley says not much information can be given until the investigation is complete. The judge asked for specific information on why the children were moved, Burley said no other information was available at this time. The judge questions how can you not give me the information I have the oversight of your agency and the interests of these children, I MUST have answers.
The Hockley County DA’s office is also working an investigation on Children’s Hope as well however no further information can be provided at this time. Child Protective Services continue their investigation as well. The Chief Legal Counsel for Children’s Hope said they will announce in the next weeks their goals for moving forward.
