Lawsuit filed in Shooting Death in Levelland

The Levelland Police Department along with the City of Levelland have been listed as defendents in a five million dollar lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas by an attorney out of Colorado representing the family of the deceased.

The suit filed on behalf of Emilia Espinoza, the widow of Jose Antonio Espinoza, who was fatally shot by 2 Levelland Police Officers in January of 2015.  The 2 officers being sued individually were not identified in the suit.  Police Chief Toney Cowan and the City of Levelland as a whole were listed in the suit.

The lawsuit charges that the officers “unjustifiably shot and killed” Espinoza and used excessive deadly force.
