Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of former Brownfield ISD Superintendent Jerry Jones who died in a farm accident on the family farm Wednesday morning.
Terry County Sheriff Larry Gilbreath has confirmed that he along with deputies from the Terry County Sheriff’s office and Brownfield EMS were called to the Jones Family Farm. Sheriff Gilbreath said upon arrival they found Jones head first unresponsive in a hole approximately 4 foot deep which had water in it. The Sheriff’s office said all indications indicate that Jones fell into the hole. Reports indicate he was likely working on a water line, there was fresh dirt where he had dug it out.
Terry County Justice of the Peace, Angie Garza pronounced Jones dead at the scene. She said no autopsy will be ordered. The cause of death is listed as drowning and suffocation secondary to a fall into the hole.
Jones was a long time teacher at Brownfield Middle School and Brownfield High School before becoming the Superintendent. He was Superintendent for 9 years before retiring.
Funeral Services are pending with Brownfield Funeral Home.
