Today marks the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year for all schools on the South Plains including most of our area colleges and universities.
Drivers are urged to use caution, slow down and watch for students as the new school year starts. Levelland ISD opens today for 3100 plus students.
One of the big changes for Levelland ISD is a new school zone near Cactus Academic Center. Cactus this year will be housing the 4th and 5th graders while contractors work to remodel Levelland Intermediate School during the 2015-2016 school year. Another change in school zones in Levelland is a new school zone on West Avenue near the Childrens Hope facility and the former Levelland Development Center which will used as a school facility by Mullins ISD who is responsible for educating Childrens Hope students beginning this year. Levelland Police Chief Toney Cowan also reminds drivers of a new school zone sign which was installed on Hickory Street, the new sign does not flash, however, drivers are reminded they are still required to slow down to 20 mph during morning and afternoon hours. Drivers are also reminded, cell phone use is prohibited in school zones and their will be no warnings according to the Levelland Police Department. The police department also is reminding drivers that officers will be in the middle school area and will strictly enforce the outside turning lane for drivers who are northbound on Alamo and need to turn right on Ellis. It is illegal to turn from the inside lane and will be strictly enforced by the Levelland Police Department.
