Train Derailment in Smyer Sunday

We are getting more information on a train derailment that occurred Sunday evening in Smyer.  The derailment blocked Hwy 168 for approximately an hour according to the Hockley County Sheriff’s Office.

We have not received any official word from the rail road operator, however a report from the Hockley County Sheriff’s Office said that it appeared the rail bed collapsed.  The area of the derailment is just a few 100 yards east of a derailment in June which spilled 6 rail cars of corn which was bound for the ethanol plant.  The derailment Sunday did not cause any cars to roll over fortunately.  The BNSF train was empty at the time and was coming from the ethanol plant going back to Lubbock.  Three cars derailed Sunday evening.
