A special Hockley County Grand Jury was convened today in the 286th District Court. The purpose was to hear evidence on the officer involved shooting which occurred in January.
Two Levelland Police officers, Kase Donahue and Raul Lopez responded to a disturbance in January at a Levelland residence. Upon arrival the suspect, Antonio Espinoza Ruiz came at officers with a weapon according to police reports. Both officers reportedly fired their duty weapon hitting Ruiz. Ruiz was pronounced dead at the hospital. The investigation was turned over to the Texas Rangers and they eventually turned evidence over to the Hockley County District Attorney Chris Dennis who called the special grand jury. Dennis told KLVT news that testimony was presented all day Thursday and both officers cases were presented separate. The Grand Jury unanimously cleared both officers on the 3 charges presented, Murder, Involuntary Manslaughter and Criminally Negligent Homicide.
Both officers were placed on leave immediately following the incident but were cleared to return to work by grief counselors approximately 2 weeks after the incident. Donahue has been an officer with the Levelland Police Department since 2013 and Lopez has been with the department since 2012.
