An Artesia NM pilot, Richie Crockett escaped serious injury Thursday afternoon when a crop duster plane he was flying crashed just west of the Levelland Airport property. Reports indicate the pilot had just picked up the new plane at the Levelland Airport when he noticed he was having mechanical issues while enroute home to New Mexico. He was returning to the airport when the plane went down on Highway 385 and slid into a ditch on the west side of the road. Part of the plane was reportedly snagged by a barbed wire fence on the west side of the road and the nose and propeller of the aircraft broke loose and came to rest against the fence.
Traffic was detoured off of Highway 385 for several hours while the investigation was ongoing. The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Several agencies responded to assist with securing the scene including the Levelland Police Department, Hockley County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, SPC Police Department, Levelland EMS and the Levelland Fire Department.
