Levelland Man Dies in Thursday Night Shooting

Levelland Police Department officers were in the process of conducting a Hot Check Roundup Thursday evening around 8pm at a residence in the vicinity of 5th street and Ave. J.

After a lengthy attempt to get the occupant to answer the door, the occupant did respond. However the occupant refused to exit his house and produced a handgun. At that point the officers took cover and heard a single gunshot from the house. The officers returned cover fire, from a defense stance according to police officials.

The officers then approached the house and found the subject dead of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. In accordance with the policy of the Levelland Police Department the officers involved are temporarily on administrative duty and the investigation of this incident has been turned over to the Texas Rangers.

The subject has been identified as 44 year old Lloyd Halbrooks of Levelland. Police Chief Toney Cowan told KLVT news the subject did not have a criminal history. He also said his officers fired a total of 3 shots after the subject fired a shot from inside the house.
