Levelland ISD Board of Trustees hold Emergency Meeting

The Levelland ISD Board of Trustees met Monday afternoon in an Emergency Called Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to make nominations for the Hockley County Appraisal District Board of Directors.

District administration was notified late Friday that one of the district’s representatives was not eligible to serve on the board. Iris Keeling has been one of the school districts representatives on the Hockley County Appraisal District Board of Directors for the past several years. The problem emerged this week when it was discovered that the Texas Property Code Section 6.03a states that an employee of a tax generating entity cannot serve on the board of directors UNLESS they are a board member of one of the governing bodies. Keeling was eligible to serve when she was on the school board, however, when her term on the school board ended her eligibility ended as well because she is an employee of South Plains College.

In the meeting Monday the school board agreed to submit FE Shaheen and Paul Ochoa as their nominees for the Appraisal District Board of Directors. The school board and other taxing entities will vote on the Appraisal District Board of Directors in their November meeting.
