Levelland City Council met Monday night in a regular meeting. The full report from that meeting is below…….
The council passed a resolution to clarify that even though the city will begin recording council meetings the official minutes of the meeting will still be the written minutes taken by the city secretary’s office and maintained by that office. The recordings will still be available to the public following a meeting.
The council also had a discussion concerning the possibility of extending the service agreement with Republic Services for Garbage Collection. City staff indicated that the current agreement ends in September and they feel it is an inopportune time as city staff is currently focusing attention on 2 main projects, the development and soon to start construction of the new landfill and the new sports complex. Republic Services has agreed to extend the current agreement with absolutely no rate increase for the next 2 years. This is advantagious because it will allow the construction of the new landfill to be complete before we seek proposals for service in 2 years, the city is already forced to raise garbage rates by 5% this year and 5% next year for the construction and operation of the new landfill. It was also noted that it is likely that any request for proposal would likely mean an increase in current rates.
The council also approved submitting a grant application for a 2013 Safer Grant or staffing for adequate fire and emergency response grant program to hire 2 additional firefighters for the Levelland Fire Department. The grant would pay the salary and benefits for the 2 firefighters for 2 years.
The council also agreed to reappoint members to the Tax Increment Finance Zone 1 and 2 boards and also appointed Kelly Read to fill a vacancy on the Community Development Corporation Board which oversees the development of the Levelland Oxy Sports Complex.
The council also held a budget work session following the meeting.
