City of Levelland Offices OPEN today

With so many businesses closing today due to the inclement weather, Levelland City offices are open. City Manager Rick Osburn released this statement today to explain the reasoning behind the decision to remain open.

Statement from Levelland City Manager Rick Osburn…….

With the bad weather and so many closings we have been receiving calls about the City closing. I wanted to let you know why we do not close the City in these situations.

When we have trying conditions such as these at least 75% of City personnel will have to work anyway. Our Police and Fire Departments are always open and in situations such as these could have to call in extra off duty personnel to help deal with traffic accidents and problems. Our Street Department is responsible for keeping roads open and some sidewalks clear, and often they enlist the aid of Parks and Cemetery Department personnel and equipment. With weather this cold the Water department is dealing with frozen and broken lines. Basically, if we closed the City the only employees that could stay home are those in City Hall, and if they stayed home, the Fire Department would have to handle increased phone calls from the calls forwarded from City Hall at a time they are already busy. For these reasons, short of a natural disaster destroying City Hall, I do not see why we would ever close due to weather.
