HPRN news attended a meeting of residents in Whitharral this past week. Bobby Eubanks with the US Postal Service gave residents the reasons behind why the Whitharral Post Office along with the Pep Post Office and 3 more in this area are on a list being evaluated for possible closure.
He stressed that a decision has not been made and he won’t make a decision for 2 to 3 weeks about weather to continue with the closure process. It was learned that prior to 1971 the Post Office was a federally subsidized portion of the federal government, that is no longer the case, they receive all of their funding through stamp and product sales along with box rental fees. They do not receive any federal funding. Residents in Whitharral and Pep are out to save their post office and they plan to seek the help of US Congressman, Randy Neugabauer who represents the 19th congressional district. A petition signed by many in attendance will be forwarded to his office asking him to vote against closure. Residents are also asked to contact their congressman to help in this situation.
HPRN news will continue to follow this process and will bring you updates as they become available.
